Preface

Below is a brief description of the geography of the country and an even briefer overview of the history of the country.

Fortunate to the Czechs their history is somewhat longer than my overview!
I start from behind, as it is my impression that the latest part of the history is interesting to most visitors.

Two embassy addresses may be relevant. To Danes:

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Denmark:
Ryvangs Allé 14
DK-2100 Copenhagen Ø
Phone: + 45 39 29 18 88

And
The Danish Embassy in the Czech Republic:
P.O Box 25
Maltéske nam. 5
CZ-118 01 Praha 1 - Mala Strana
Phone: +420 2 57 31 66 30
E-mail: prgamb@um.dk

The national anthem is "Kde domov muj", which means "Where is my home"

The present look of the flag is from the first republic during Masaryk.
The white colour is a symbol of peace, the red of national unity while the blue is a symbol of freedom. Originally the blue colour is told to symbolise the High Tatras.

Much useful information is available with CIA as source. Though it sounds rather unbelievable.

Dictionaries are mandatory if you do not master the Czech Language. Or at least one dictionary. That is no problem at all, just enter the first bookshop and buy what you need. The prices are very reasonable and any bookshop has a large selection that covers many languages. If your need is pure tourism, I recommend the dictionary on the image: It is in a handy soft plastic cover and fits into a pocket. It is available in more languages.

If you just want to check a single word, the online multilingual dictionary slovnik.cz is very convenient.

Are you bored? Then look at some of these webcams:

Maps

Detailed electronic maps are available at more sites. Personally I use Mapy.cz.

If you want to purchase maps it is possible by Kiwi. Select "Prodejna" on the main menu and you get a long list of vendors.
Hiking maps in scale 1:50.000 is found under "Klub ceských turistu-mapy".
The prices are reasonable and so are the postage - Kiwi do sell abroad.
Likewise maps are for sale at Mapy Cabalka.

History

Many sources are available regarding the Czehc history, however I do recommend Petr Cornej: "Fundamentals of Czech History", Práha Publishers 1992, ISBN 80-901278-1-9, if you want a brief introduction to Czech history - or go to the local library for a general guide book.
